An Online Manual for Integrating Web2 Technology in Education

The developments in open source software, open course ware, e-learning, web-2 technologies, and accessibility to broadband internet, along with advanced technological equipments have made the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education more promising. New technologies require new teacher competencies, new teacher roles, new instructional designs, new learning strategies, and new approaches to training and development of teachers. The successful integration of these tools depend on the teachers ability’ to use it productively to create learning communities of students.

However the traditional computer training programmes will no longer provide prospective teachers with all the necessary competence for teaching students to develop 21st century skills such as problem solving, communication, collaboration, experimentation, critical thinking, and creative expression that are needed to create new knowledge and to live, learn, and work successfully in an increasingly complex, information-rich and knowledge based society.

In this background an online manual is developed and tried out in line with the “UNESCO ICT Competency Framework for Teachers project”. Specifically it aims to be in compliance with the “ICT Competency Standards for Teachers” (ICT-CST) developed by UNESCO. The indented users of this manual are teachers, teacher educators, ICT coordinators, trainers and any one else concerned about integrating ICT (web2 in particular) in improving the educational practices.

The Manual is the result of an NCERT funded project conceived and implemented by M.U.Paily (Ph.D) for NCERT. The project details can be accessed from the “Introduction” menu on top. There are many ICT in education innovators from different parts of the country, who have contributed modules to this manual and their details can be accessed from the menu “Contributors”
